The Nightmare of Unreadable PDFs & Ugly Grey Covers on Kindle & Kobo (and How I Fixed It)

Let me tell you something. About a year ago I was scrolling through the Play Store reviews of my app and stumbled upon one that said, more or less: "The app works, but the converted PDF looks terrible, it's unreadable." One star, obviously.

Why PDFs on e-readers have always been a pain

Anyone who works with documents knows the truth: a PDF isn't really made for a 6-inch or 7-inch e-reader screen. It's a fixed A4 print layout that can contain anything—two-column text, weird headers, scanned images, or tables. If you copy a raw PDF onto a Kindle or a Kobo, the text is microscopic and you spend your whole time pinching and zooming on a slow E-Ink screen.

On the other hand, if you run a naive conversion on a scanned PDF or an illustrated slide deck, everything explodes. That 1-star review made me stop and think: it's time to take a real leap forward.

Smart pre-analysis & the second problem: ugly libraries

In Send to Reader, I built a smart pre-conversion analysis layer. Before converting a PDF on our cloud containers (which I eventually had to upgrade up to 4GB–8GB of RAM on Cloud Run because huge 50MB PDFs from 2003 scanners kept blowing up memory!), the system checks whether your file is a text-heavy book/essay or an illustrated/fixed-layout document.

And while I was at it, I fixed my second biggest pet peeve with e-readers: opening your Kindle or Kobo shelf and seeing a row of blank grey rectangles named doc_final_v2_signed_scan.pdf. If we love books, our digital shelf should look like a real bookstore.

Mini-Guide: How to send a readable PDF or EPUB with a custom cover

Here is how to turn any messy PDF or EPUB file on your phone into a clean, properly cataloged book on your Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook, or Boox:

1

Select your PDF, EPUB, or Word file

Share the file directly from iOS Files, Google Drive, WhatsApp, Telegram, or tap the "+" button inside Send to Reader.

2

Choose Reflowable Text or Original Layout

If it's a novel, essay, or university paper made of text, choose Reflowable / Clean so you can freely enlarge the font size on your e-reader. If it's slides, sheet music, or tables, keep Original Layout.

3

Tap the pencil icon to edit Title, Author & Cover (PRO)

Before hitting send, tap the edit pencil on the queued file. Replace ugly filenames with the real Title and Author so your Kobo or Kindle sorts it neatly.

4

Pick a custom cover image & send wirelessly

Upload any image from your phone's photo gallery as the book cover—or let the app generate a high-contrast typographical cover automatically. Tap Send and download it in one tap on sr.luciosoft.it.

Kindle & Kobo Lockscreen Trick:
Want your custom book cover to show up full-screen when your e-reader is asleep? On Kindle, go to Settings → Screen and Brightness → Show Covers on Lock Screen. Because Send to Reader embeds the cover properly inside the converted EPUB metadata, even personal documents and university notes will have their own lockscreen cover!

1

Scegli il tuo file PDF, EPUB o Word

Condividi il documento direttamente dall'app File di iOS, Google Drive, WhatsApp, Telegram, oppure tocca il tasto "+" dentro Send to Reader.

2

Seleziona "Testo Adattabile" oppure "Originale"
